High-risk viral pathogens
Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is a global health problem with the highest burden of disease in Asia, the Pacific Islands and sub-Saharan Africa. There are 2 billion infected people worldwide (one-third of the world's population), and 400 million suffer from chronic HBV infection (90% of infants and up to 50% of young children infected with hepatitis B develop chronic infection). HBV infections result in approximately 1 million deaths per year caused by HBV and its complications (HBV-related liver disease).
The estimated global prevalence of HBV is 3%, affecting about 180 million people, with 3 to 4 million new infections reported each year. The vast majority of infected people (70-90%) develop chronic infection. Although chronic infection can be asymptomatic, it is the leading cause of chronic liver disease, including cirrhosis, in 20-50% of patients. Treatment can be effective in 10-50% of patients, depending on the therapy used.
Hepatitis delta virus (HDV) has an epidemiologic distribution similar to HBV. It has been detected worldwide with uneven rates of spread. There are about 10 million people infected with HDV worldwide, and it has largely similar patterns of spread to HBV, but at different rates.
